Get started below!
Required Knowledge
Required knowledge is a term that gets thrown around a lot before you ship out. Technically, it's whatever your recruiter says it is, and usually includes the 11 General Orders and Rates and Ranks.
In practice, that body of required knowledge gets much bigger at an exponential rate once your arrive to USCG Basic Training. In other words, it's better to get ahead of it now.
A good place to start is the Chain of Command.
Mental Preparation
Don't let your 8 week Coast Guard Boot Camp experience turn into a 12 week nightmare. Reversions are a painful reality.
I'm not saying you can turn this into a beautiful dream, but you can certainly make it a challenging, rewarding experience without the bloodletting – if you prepare properly.
This 110 page ebook will fill in many of gaps that you won't get in the bare-bones required knowledge.
Physical Preparation
Getting physically ready for Coast Guard Boot Camp is very important. That's not exactly revealing news.
However, the process of what that looks like is going to look different for everybody.
The reason is simple: your exercise history and current fitness level are unique to you. That means you need a plan that's going to cater to your fitness type.
Why Survive Coast Guard Boot Camp?
Because basic training is hard enough as it is when you ARE prepared. If you've already made the decision to enlist, it only makes sense to show up ready on day one.
Go Beyond
The Helmsman has Rates and Ranks but it doesn't describe all the embroidery items like shoulder board insignia, collar device and lacing for each uniform – and you are expected to know this. Learn what you need to know before Day Zero One.
Understand Timed Objectives
Learn about specific drills before you arrive at Cape May. Page 64 of the Survival Guide reveals the exact description of the most common timed objective exercise and how to practice for it now so it's a breeze when you get there.
Master the Unwritten Rules
The Survival Guide covers critical details not in the Helmsman - from uniform embroidery descriptions to galley protocols, rack inspection strategies, and the proper way to respond to Company Commanders.
Avoid Common Mistakes
New recruits make predictable mistakes that lead to performance trackers and incentive training. Learn the 4 layers of protection to fly under the radar, the respond-then-react principle, and how to keep your military bearing under pressure.
